Browser Usage We Are Seeing

June 13th, 2014 by Erick Beck

As a followup to my last post about Chrome, I was asked what our traffic looked like across the board in terms of browser usage.

We have not yet seen the tip from IE to Chrome as the most used. Our analytics show:

  • Internet Explorer: 33.5%
    • IE 11: 30.4%
    • IE 10: 27.3%
    • IE 9: 22.1%
    • IE 8: 12.2%
    • IE 7: 7.9%
    • IE 6: 0.06%
  • Chrome: 29.4%
  • Safari: 21.3%
  • Firefox: 11.7%
  • Android browser: 2.1%

I include the full breakdown for IE to answer the inevitable question of “which version of IE should I support?”

Certainly IE 6 is as good as dead, don’t worry about it. IE 7 has a small, but not insignificant, user base. I would say make sure those users can get your content but don’t worry so much about making sure they see the full page design. IE 8 usage is shrinking but still large enough to need supporting. We have moved over to developing in HTML5, and the polyfill scripts that go along with that have done a more than adequate job in making IE 8 capable of rending our designs.
