Three reasons why your website visitors can’t stay long

March 9th, 2009 by mdmcginnis

Webmasters want to greet visitors with “Welcome to Our Website – stay awhile”. But many visitors consider a website successful only if they don’t have to stay awhile. Why?

  1. First of all, people expect to get answers immediately on the Web. If they could wait for answers, they would walk to the library.
  2. Secondly, reading on a screen is more tiring than reading on paper, because the screen flickers imperceptibly. And the letters and images aren’t quite as smooth as they are on paper.
  3. Finally, the Web involves delays. Sometimes your challenge is to get your message across to your readers before their browsers freeze up. Neurologically, we are built to expect a response to our actions in less than a second. We have to tame our primordial instincts to wait for pages to download when the Web is “slow,” though I’m not sure that really works.
