via @mdmcginnis: Eliminate duplicate pages, specify your canonical: Official Google Blog

February 13th, 2009 by tamuwebmaster

Google, Yahoo and Microsoft ( have agreed to support a new meta-tag that specifies which version of a Web page is the official (or canonical) one that needs to be indexed. This innovation should allow more pages to be indexed on large sites, with more “linking juice” focused on a few pages instead of being diluted by indexing every possible variation (sort from A-Z, sort from Z-A, most recent, etc.).
