Playing Map-o Polo! A Map Portal!

October 8th, 2008 by tamuwebmaster

This is part 2 in a 4 series on the new campus maps project. Remember when you were a kid and you would play Marco Polo? Finding information on the web is kind of like that. You ask Google or the Texas A&M search engine (Marco) for something, it returns several different results (Polo), and you try and find the one “closest” to your needs.

In today’s mapping technology, finding spatial – information about a location related to other information – information can be like that. There are many organizations on campus that already maintain mapping information, such as Transportation Services and Facilities Coordination. While integration may be an option in the future, the information that already exists should not be overlooked.

That’s why we’re creating a Campus Maps Portal to link to as many of the existing spatial information systems as possible! The goal of this portal is to improve the spatial Marco Polo game and hopefully help our users find information faster.

The Campus Map maintained by Marketing & Communications will be linked on there, as well as others who already maintain spatial information or maps. If you would like to be linked on this site, let us know! Hopefully while discussing that, we can talk about integration services as well (see part 4 in this series)!
