Information and insight from the A&M Webmasters

Web Accessibility, Part 2

March 10th, 2008 by Erick Beck

John and I have been asked to serve on the A&M System level IT Governance: Web Design and Development Subcommittee. This turned out to be good timing in light of the recent effort to rewrite the state guidelines regarding web accessibility (see previus post.)

Our first meeting was last week, and we immediately began looking at putting together an accssibility policy for the A&M System. A smaller working group, chaired by John, was appointed to report on accessibility, usability, and required elements.

We at the university level are somewhat ahead of the curve in that we have an accessibility policy already in place, but the formation of this system level group and the revision of state guidelines gives us a good opportunity to reexamine what we have and make any needed updates. Such things as Key Public Entry Points and required links and HTML elements, for example, are woefully out of date. In order to make sure that the information at the system level is correct, I would like to look at getting a similar working group together at the university level to start looking at all things web accessibility. If you are passionate about the issue and would like to participate please feel free to contact us.
