Web Templates

February 5th, 2008 by Erick Beck

As we get closer to the Brand Council preview I’ve been spending a lot of time getting some complimentary web templates ready. When we launch the WWW site several of the related sub-sites will be posted in these templates to give you an idea of how they might look and work. What we’re actually looking for will be to bring folks into a common approach toward design centered around the Brand Guide, not create a set of mandated page looks. As such we are going to try setting up some common code that can be swapped out between templates — if one template has a feature that you like but the template you like doesn’t, just pull it from one and insert it into the other. Ben has a lot of great ideas on code reuse, which I’m sure he’ll get into later.

One change that we are going to be making with the past is the use of the university website as a template for others on campus. We want the university site to be unique and build a community of other sites that complement rather than copy its look and feel. This is why we think it’s important to create a suite of templates and to continue developing them even after the university site has launched. We would also invite departments and offices who would like a little help in creating branded templates to contact us and let us work with you.
