Upgrade to Google Search Appliance

November 28th, 2007 by Erick Beck

Google recently released a major software upgrade for the search appliance. We applied this upgrade earlier this week, updating the GSA from version 4.6.4 to 5.0. This new version should give better returns and offers a few more features on the back end that allow us to tweak returns.

I belive we have found most of the web black-holes over the last few weeks and the document count has stabilized well below our licensed limit. We’ve been pretty aggressive in what we filter out, so we can begin slowly easing up on the do-not-crawl list and allowing more pages into the index.

Our plan is to “go live” with the search appliance at the same time as we launch the new university web site. By that time we’ll have a FAQ and webmaster’s guide put together so that other sites around campus can also use the GSA to power their searches.
