Server Upgrades

September 28th, 2007 by Erick Beck

As mentioned in the Terms of Service document that we recently posted, we intend to make sure that the installation of software packages on the server is kept up to date. One of the packages that is planned to be upgraded soon is PHP. According to, the PHP4 engine, which is currently installed on the machine, is set for end of life on January 1, 2008. We therefore plan to upgrade to PHP5 this fall.

Our intention is to install and maintain a very minimal feature set. The WWW server was designed as a web server rather than application server so we do not feel that a large, complex installation is warranted. Unless there is compelling reason, database connectivity will not be included.

Our intention is not to break anybody’s existing site, but to create a more service platform more in line with its original mission. If anyone is using PHP on the server and needs to have certain modules installed please let us know as soon as possible so we can incorporate them into the plan. We are tentatively looking at a November 1 rollout for the new version.
