Fun with Fonts, Part 3

August 14th, 2007 by tamuwebmaster

Speaking of fonts, in the same way that Verdana was created for Microsoft for use in Internet Explorer and is now used in most Windows/Mac systems and browsers, Microsoft has released a new font specifically for use with/developed for Vista: Segoe UI.

According to Microsoft, there are two flavors. Segoe UI is the default font for the Vista operating system and for screen use. Segoe (without the “UI” ) is for print/Office applications.

The benefit for Texas A&M is the fact that SegoeUI/Segoe is remarkably close to Frutiger (in some cases too close). For those waiting on the Brand Guide (and we are working on getting the site up), Frutiger is the university’s choice for sans-serif font. While this won’t help XP or Mac users (maybe Office 2008 for Mac), it’s a good addition to your “font-family” statement in your CSS.

By the way, the fonts that have been selected as the “A&M” fonts are available for purchase through the SELL. This doesn’t mean much for coding, but they are handy when creating display graphics.
