Interesting search alternative: Google Custom Search

June 22nd, 2012 by mdmcginnis

Prompted by the recent brief outage of our Google Search Appliance, we updated our Google Custom Search Engine (CSE) settings so we can use it the next time the Google Search Appliance is unavailable.

The Custom Search Engine uses the public Google search engine to search Texas A&M websites, and I was amazed at the many features that it offers, considering that it’s free. In fact, I was able to match our site design, import our Do Not Crawl list and add all the KeyMatches from the Google Search Appliance. The CSE even includes features that aren’t standard with the Google Search Appliance, such as autocompletion/search-as-you-type, automatic thumbnail images, and enhanced KeyMatch descriptions.

You can read more about how to use Google Custom Search Engine on our Custom Search Engine page at marcomm.tamu.edu.
