Unique no more…

With the redesign and the subsequent work and meetings, our team has had the chance to look over a bunch of A&M websites. I don’t know if you’d call it a branding issue but there are a lot of sites that still carry the “Unique American institution” slogan/graphic.

While it is true, we are still a unique American institution, this was a catchphrase begun by former president Gates. I was at a speech he gave to the local IABC chapter where he explained how he worked that phrase somewhere into every speech.

However, once we began the brand alignment and rollout, the new campaign came out and “Welcome to Aggieland” became the new slogan (as was evidenced in our transitional templates on www). And as we head into the Fall and football season, I’m sure there will be new spots and themes that build upon the popularity of “Aggieland”.

For those sites that are still using banners with the “Unique…” I’d looking for ways/graphics to replace them. Visually, the “Unique” banner dates your site, and it now lacks the backing to explain where that statement comes from. When that was the tag, we had materials and copy that incorporated that theme to help explain that facet of the university’s appeal, but with the redesign and rewrite of all the copy, there is a different tone.
